Beginners’ Ideas for Referrals

by Carl on August 3, 2011

If you are just starting out in the freebie world, then you may be struggling to get enough referrals to matter.  Getting enough people to sign up so you can get those great Macbook Pro deals (i.e. the $0 ones) may seem like an impossibility.  So, here are some simple methods that I’ve found to work well during my own campaigns.

1.) Add your referral link to your profiles on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc…  This is an obvious step, but many people are uncomfortable putting such info onto their personal profiles.  However, it’s a potential goldmine, and shouldn’t be overlooked.  People do actually read your profiles, and when they see something like “Here’s how I won a free Macbook Pro: <Your Referral Link Here>,” they will probably be interested.  If they start asking questions, show them how to sign up, and you’ll get an easy referral.

2.) Add your referral link to your forum signature(s).  This is actually a very underused method, but some people do use it as their sole means of gaining referrals.  You simply add your referral link to your signature.  That’s it.  You don’t go and spam it all across the boards, because that will get you banned.  However, if you simply spend 20 minutes to 1 hour each day having an on topic conversation on the forum, you will get referrals, because people will see your link every time you post.  It helps if the forum you are a part of is related in some way to your gift, like a Macintosh computer forum for an Apple freebie site.  However, your posts must be a part of the natural conversation.  Otherwise people won’t trust you.  Simply have normal conversations on the forum, and you will start getting referrals.

3.)  Send your referral links to your email lists.  If you have a lot of email contacts, this can be a spike in your referrals.  How many of your friends and associates would like a free Macbook Pro?  Sending them an email showing them how they could get one if they sign up with your link can be very effective. However, you need to be careful not to spam.  Don’t keep sending them emails, one or two to each list of contacts is sufficient.  Trust is the key here.

4.) Try putting your referral link on business cards or onto a “tear-off” poster.  You can get 500 business cards printed off very easily.  Place them on bulletin boards around your local area.  Using a poster like you see for someone’s car for sale or for a babysitting service, with the little tear off slips on the bottom, is particularly effective.  Make sure your link is on those slips.  Anyone who tears one off is likely to sign up.

These are just a few of the ideas you can use to earn that freebie you’ve been after.  They are not as fast as some methods, but for someone who’s just starting out, they can be a gold mine.  Remember, over 10 million people earn a freebie every day.  Many of them use nothing more than these methods here.  These will work for you, if you put them into action.  So what are you waiting for?  Go out there and get that free Macbook Pro.
